This mountain range is home to the highest mountain peak in the world, Mount Everest. It is the main tourist attraction in Tibet. It’s a destination for taking advantage of the outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, and camping, or just experiencing the cultural heritage of the various Tibetan villages.

Mount Everest

Tours to Tibet can be planned around taking an Everest expedition. These climbing tours can last days ascending then descending. 

There are two main climbing routes. Each gives a different perspective of the mountain. The path along the northern side of the mountain takes you along the Rongbuk Glacier. On the other hand, the path to the south overlooks the Sagarmatha National Park.

The southern route is the most common and can be walked by climbers of all levels. The route actually makes it relatively easy to ascend the mountain. 

The biggest challenge with climbing Mount Everest is the altitude. Weather conditions, oxygen levels, etc. are all factors that come into play when climbing at this altitude.

It will definitely be worth it once you reach the summit. Climbing Mount Everest is a major accomplishment. It’s the site of many record-breaking climbers. 

The peak of the mountain will truly let you experience the highest point possible on Earth.

Sagarmatha National Park

The flora and fauna of the Sagarmatha National Park is almost as diverse as the Tibetan culture.

The Sagarmatha National Park is visible from Mount Everest on the most common route to the summit. This location places the national park in the Nepalese area of Tibet. 

The Sagarmatha National Park covers a large area stretching from the already elevated plateau to the highest peak of the Himalayas. It’s the first national park in Nepalinfo-icon that was established to conserve the landscape and natural ecosystems.

The national park is where you’ll see the most diverse set of plant life and animal life when you visit Tibet. The wide range in elevation included within the park means that you can discover a different species as you move up or down. 

Many bird species live here and can be seen even near the mountain peaks. It’s also a variety of animal species. The rarest of them all include wolves, Snow Leopards, and even Pandas.

Tourists frequently travel through the Sagarmatha National Park. There are several entrances as well as a visitor’s center that can provide resources for navigating the park. 

Trails can be found around the park, many of them leading into small villages to give you a peek at local Tibetan life.

Lhasa

Potala Palace is one of the most unique attractions of Lhasa with its unique architecture.

The main tourist hub when you visit Tibet will be Lhasa. Lhasa is the capital of the entire Tibet region. This city borders the Himalayas and the Lhasa River. 

It has existed for over 1,000 years and has a lot of historical landmarks to reflect it. China used to control this region so major influences can be seen all throughout the city.

Potala Palace is one of the most popular destinations for tourists. This palace holds significant religious and political importance to all of Tibet. It was once the former residence of the Dalai Lama.

Now, it’s a major cultural site that provides visitors with guided tours throughout the palace. You’ll get a chance to explore many of its rooms seeing a variety of furniture, antiques, paintings, and Buddhist relics.

Many of the destroyed historical monasteries have been rebuilt. These monasteries give a glimpse into Tibet’s past. 

The Drepung Monastery is definitely worth visiting. It is the largest of the big three monasteries in Tibet. It’s where Dalai Lamas came to train. 

Another place to learn about the history of Tibet is in the Tibet Museum. This museum holds a wide range of relics, artifacts, and artwork.

You’ll also want to check out the Barket Street Market. It’s located nearby the Jokhang Temple. This street is actually the oldest street in Tibet. 

It has always been used for religious purposes as a pilgrimage pathway to the temple. The street is also home to the best street market in Tibet. You can find lots of local vendors selling everything from food, locally made crafts, and souvenirs.

Having an official guide when you visit Tibet is required due to the tourism laws of the region. These guides can include many different tours of Tibet. The tours are differentiated by the type of experience that you want to have.

Top of the world

Mount Everest is the literal top of the world.

You can find tours that let you achieve the “top of the world” status. These tours take you specifically to Mount Everest in preparation for climbing or just being able to adjust to the altitude. 

Other tours can take you around the entire region. The Tibet region of the Himalayas includes several of the top peaks in the world, many famous rivers flow here, and there are countless historic monasteries.
