- Lamu Island: oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa (inhabited since 700 years)
- Swahili: ethnic and cultural group of people on the East African coast with some Arabic influence
- Ramadan: it is hard to get any food in daytime during the month of fasting and spiritual reflection
- Transportation: there are lots of donkeys instead of cars (they say, the only car is an ambulance)
- UNESCO: courtyards, verandas, and wooden doors built in coral stone and mangrove timber
