Montenegroinfo-icon on the map

Montenegro is a small country located in southern Europeinfo-icon. It neighbors the countries Croatiainfo-icon, Bosnia and Herzegovinainfo-icon, Serbiainfo-icon, Kosovoinfo-icon, and Albaniainfo-icon.

Although it is a small country, you will never get bored. From the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea to the breathing mountaintops, and endless historical spots, there is something for everyone.

Therefore, now that we’ve answered the question where is Montenegro let’s move on to why this country should be your next destination of choice.

The Adriatic Sea

The idyllic coast of the Adriatic Sea.

If sun, beach, and relaxation are what you need then head on to one of the 117 beaches along the Adriatic coast of Montenegro. Although most of the beaches in Montenegro are pebble ones, it is due to them that the waters are so clear. Some of the beaches you should consider visiting while in Montenegro should be:

  • The Jaz Beach. Apart from being one of the longest beaches in Montenegro, it is also one of the most popular. Therefore, if you are looking for some peace and quiet, then maybe you should look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for fun and entertainment, then you’ve come to the right place. This pebble beach hosts some of the best beach bars and restaurants, where you can relax and have one of their famous cocktails while listening to some of the newest hits.  Then again, if you would like to try some water sports, then this beach has activities, such as surfing, waterskiing, and windsurfing.
  • Becici Beach. This is one of the most famous pebble beaches in Montenegro. People who visit this beach, come for the pebbles. It might sound ridiculous, but the smoothness and different shapes and colors of the pebbles have been drawing visitors from all around the world. It has often been called one of the best beaches in Europe, and a must see when in Montenegro.
  • Sveti Stefan. If you are looking for a once in a lifetime experience, then make sure you visit the beach Sveti Stefan. Although visiting the island Sveti Stefan might not be an option, due to the pretty hefty price you have to pay, don’t worry you can still get some of the experience by going to some of the nearby beaches. The public beach, south of the island is perfect if you want to relax and enjoy the waters, while looking at the fortified island village, with its red rooftops.

Historical Spots

The resting place of St. Basil, inside Ostrog Monastery.

If you are into history and want to learn more about the traditions of this country, then there are many places that you can visit. Some of these places are the Ostrog Monastery, which showcases the incredible craftsmanship of a past time, and houses the undecayed body of St. Basil, which according to Montenegrins is a true miracle.

If you are more into political sites, instead of religious buildings, then a trip to the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos will be worth the trip.

One thing that these two places have in common is the breathtaking nature which surrounds them. If picture perfect views are what you seek, then the view from the mausoleum is something you will not experience anywhere else. Located on top of Lovcen Mountain, it is said that on a bright day you can see as far as Albania and Croatia.

Visit some of the most interesting cities

Kotor offers a perfect vista for any nature lover.

Some places that you can visit while you are in Montenegro are Kotor and Budva. Although there are plenty other places to go if you are planning a short visit then make sure you visit these first.

Both of these towns have some of the best beaches with the deep blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. Just like any city in the Balkans, there are also many historical sites which you can visit while there.

If you are traveling in summer, then Budva is the place to be, since there are countless local performances and shows from everywhere in the world. It is also the seat of some of the best bars and nightclubs, which during the summer period, are filled with people from all over the world.
